Article Excerpts:
John McCain vowed to further open world markets to U.S. and Iowa products during a speech he made this
morning before hundreds of people at the Iowa State Fair.
McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, also emphasized his desire for more energy independence
through offshore oil drilling and more use of nuclear power.
He criticized Democratic candidate Barack Obama's recent comments about the need for Americans to
properly inflate their tires to get the best gas mileage.
"I'm all in favor of inflating our tires, don't get me wrong. But that's a public service announcement.
It's not an energy policy," McCain said to a cheering crowd at The Des Moines Register's soap box. . . .
McCain arrived at the Des Moines airport at around 10 a.m. He and his wife Cindy shook hands with many
of the people who swarmed around him. He visited the butter cow as well as the big boar and ate a pork
chop on a stick before leaving the fairgrounds to attend a fundraiser at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.
He is expected to leave Iowa at around 2 p.m. today.
