Sen. John McCain described himself today as a maverick who hasn't always supported the Bush administration.
While campaigning in Sparks, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee portrayed Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, as a big spender who wants to raise taxes.
McCain's wife, Cindy, introduced him to an audience of about 1,250 people at Reed High School.
McCain's next campaign event in Northern Nevada will be at a private fundraiser in Incline Village this afternoon.
In a short interview after a town hall meeting in Sparks, John McCain said he supports the use of all of the country's energy resources, including and coal and nuclear power.
McCain said he will also support the Yucca Mountain Project to store the nation's nuclear waste if it can meet all environmental requirements.
But he said reprocessing of nuclear waste has to be part of the solution as well.
McCain said he believes global warming is a reality, and he supports the advancement of green technologies, including solar and wind.
Because of global warming concerns, he said the country needs to invest $2 billion a year in research on clean coal technology.
