Although U.S. Sen. Barack Obama strived to woo additional Nevada voters during his Sunday stop in Reno, a spokesman for political rival U.S. Sen. John McCain said because of Nevada's conservative voting nature the Silver State's electoral votes are expected to continue their Republican trend.
"It will be a very close race," said Mike DuHaine, McCain's political director. "Generally, if you look at Democrats in Nevada who are able to win, they tend to be far more centrist in their policies than Sen. Obama, and I believe the match-up that you have between Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama is one that favors us."
While Obama spoke to an invitation-only crowd, about 10 Republican protestors supporting McCain appeared outside of Wooster High School holding signs that read: "Hope won't fill our tanks," "Hope is not a plan" and "McCain = country over politics."
"(Obama) wants us to fill our tires to prevent oil drilling," said Samantha Guttry, 22, who is employed by nonprofit political group Victory 2008. "His tire-gauge plan is out of touch with America."
Andrew Belbin, 19, a member of Students for McCain, objected to Obama holding an invitation-only event.
"When McCain came to town in Sparks, we had four days notice and he told everyone," Belbin said. "I don't think (Obama) is making himself accessible to the public."
