Sparks Crowd Confident of McCain's Leadership

    By Jessica Estepa, Reno Gazette-Journal
    July 30, 2008

    Article Excerpt:

More than 1,000 people stood in lines wrapped around Reed High School for nearly an hour Tuesday morning before they could enter for U.S. Sen. John McCain's appearance.

Some came as early as 7 a.m., talking about what they wanted to hear from the Arizona senator.

After McCain's speech, Amanda Moran of Las Vegas said she was satisfied with what he said.

"From offshore drilling to immigration, he said what he wants to do, even if it's not what people want to hear," said Moran, 23. "I appreciate that in a candidate."

Sherman and Loretta Perry arrived just before 8 a.m., standing in line for about an hour. Sherman Perry, 59, said he supported McCain's stance on "staying the course" with the Iraq war and his other stances on national security.

"I want to know that we will be safe and the war won't come to our front door," he said.

Cathy Wilson of Sparks was most concerned about McCain's position on the economy and taxes.

"He said he won't raise them, no matter how bad the economy gets," said Wilson, 60. "I hope he keeps his word."

Tom Urbina of Reno said he wants McCain to become more aggressive in his campaign against Democratic opponent Barack Obama.

"He's not doing enough at this point," Urbina, 66, said.

With less than 100 days until the Nov. 4 election, people said they wanted McCain to decide on his running mate. While some were undecided about who they would prefer, many said they wanted former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, McCain's rival in the Nevada caucuses, on the ticket.
