Stopping briefly in his probable opponent's home state, Sen. John McCain told National
Restaurant Association members in Chicago this morning they would fare better under his tax
and job policies.
McCain, speaking to the nation's largest restaurant organization, opened with a touch of
humor. He acknowledged his host state's excitement about sending Sen. Barack Obama to
Capitol Hill in 2004 and promised listeners to "do everything within my power to help him
finish his first term in the United States Senate."
The presumptive Republican nominee, McCain told an audience representing nearly every
segment of the restaurant industry that they could expect higher taxes and increased
regulation from a Democratic administration.
"Your plans for growth and their plans for taxes are going to be hard to square," McCain's
prepared remarks read, "because you can't raise taxes by a trillion dollars without hurting
American workers."
McCain said he would emphasize low and simpler tax rates and would not, in contrast to
Obama, raise rates on capital gains.
The Arizona senator drew a contrast, too, on trade views.
"When (Obama) plays on fears of foreign trade, he's resorting to the oldest kind of politics
there is," McCain said. "It's the kind of politics that exploits problems instead of solving
them."
McCain said U.S. exports and trade agreements create jobs and income that otherwise would
not exist. He also acknowledged that global trade comes at a cost and vowed to expand and
improve federal aid for displaced workers. . . .
