John S. McCain III Library Announcement

The McCain family is proud and extremely grateful to announce the investment by President Biden’s Administration, Governor Doug Ducey and Governor Katie Hobbs and the state of Arizona, and Arizona State University to establish the John S. McCain III Library in honor of Senator John McCain. Cindy McCain commented, “It’s a great honor for President Joe Biden to be here in Tempe, Arizona today to make the announcement of his Administration’s support for the establishment of the Library. President Biden has been a long-time friend, tough political opponent and strong leader. All traits that my husband, John, also possessed.”

The McCain Library will serve as an anchor, multipurpose facility that will provide Arizonans a place to learn, research, develop, and work. Considerations for the center include a visitors’ center, an Arizona home for the Washington, DC-based McCain Institute, and a McCain Library and Archives, where scholars, students, journalists, and the community can study the Senator’s work and life.

This community facility is a true gift to the state of Arizona, which will carry the namesake of the American hero, Senator John S. McCain III, and embody the principles that guided him, democracy, national security, public service, freedom, character-driven leadership, human dignity, and community building.

"Our family is honored to be a part of this special effort to build a lasting tribute to my husband, a Library we believe will serve the State of Arizona and its people the way John served his country. This effort started with the enthusiastic support of Governor Doug Ducey and continued with the equally strong support of Governor Katie Hobbs. A true bi-partisan effort that we greatly appreciate."

ASU has dedicated a 22.5-acre portion of the Tempe campus for the John S. McCain III Library, near Papago Park, which showcases elevated views of the Rio Salado riverbed, Tempe Town Lake, and ASU’s Tempe campus - a location which honors Senator McCain’s strong advocacy for tribal communities, commitment to revitalizing the Rio Salado, and safeguarding Arizona’s water future.

"We are looking forward to continuing the McCain family’s strong partnership with ASU, and their world-class students, faculty, and leadership, to serve all communities within the state of Arizona. There is no better partner in this endeavor, than Dr. Michael Crow, who has pioneered many educational programs targeting the underserved communities by breaking down barriers to access and facilitating connection to educational opportunities for people of all ages."

"I’ve known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make a peace. I’ve lived very well and I’ve been deprived of all comforts. I’ve been as lonely as a person can be and I’ve enjoyed the company of heroes. I’ve suffered the deepest despair and experienced the highest exultation. I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."
-- John McCain

Honoring Senator McCain Through #ActsOfCivility

Senator McCain didn’t always agree with his colleagues in Congress, but he always respected them. There was nothing he enjoyed more than debating the most pressing issues of the time on the floor of the Senate with his good friend, the late Senator Ted Kennedy, shaking hands at the end of their discussion, and then sharing lunch with one another as friends. Sadly, this type of civil engagement is all too rare lately. But we can do something to help reignite a spirit of civility.

To celebrate the life and legacy of Senator McCain, the McCain family and McCain Institute are undertaking and promoting acts of civility and you're invited to engage in this effort with them.

#ActsOfCivility: What You Can Do

Senator McCain was known for grand acts of civility, but no act is too small for our campaign. Here are some #ActsOfCivility you can take:
  • Re-engage with a friend or family member with whom you disagree.
  • Learn about an issue from a different perspective.
  • Pledge to listen before responding to a viewpoint different than yours.
  • Find an issue on which to agree with someone with whom you frequently disagree.
  • Allow someone else to be in control of entertainment or food choices for the day.
  • Express your appreciation for someone else's service -- especially public service.
  • Help make someone else's day a little brighter through an act of community service.
Below are some specific ways you can help us celebrate his legacy through #ActsOfCivility:
  • Engage in #ActsOfCivility of your own or with friends and family.
  • Post your #ActsOfCivility to your favorite social media platform and challenge your friends.
  • Report, share and comment on #ActsOfCivility campaign content. You can find it on Twitter at @CindyMcCain, @McCainJack, @McCainInstitute and on Instagram @CindyMcCain and @McCainInstitute.

In His Own Words

Over the course of his service, Senator McCain’s straight talk and principled assessment of issues and events of the day positioned him as a leader and widely sought voice.  His words and thoughts on many issues remain as relevant today as they were when he spoke them. “In His Own Words” is a collection of some of Senator McCain’s memorable comments related to issues of today.

Exceptionalism
Exceptionalism

"Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history."

(Farewell Letter 2018)

Protectionism
Protectionism

"We have to fight isolationism, protectionism, and nativism. We have to defeat those who would worsen our divisions. We have to remind our sons and daughters that we became the most powerful nation on earth by tearing down walls, not building them."

(Naval Academy Speech 2017)

Detention and Torture
Detention & Torture

"But in the end, torture's failure to serve its intended purpose isn't the main reason to oppose its use. I have often said, and will always maintain, that this question isn't about our enemies; it's about us. It's about who we were, who we are and who we aspire to be. It's about how we represent ourselves to the world."
